Ranitidine is not a normal SKU. In April 2020 the US FDA requested that all ranitidine products — prescription and OTC — be pulled from the market, after investigations found that levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a probable human carcinogen, increase over time in the drug. The agency determined the impurity rises during storage, particularly above room temperature, potentially exposing consumers to unacceptable levels. Regulators in the EU and Canada took parallel action. Philippine FDA moved on it too — FDA Advisory No. 2020-746 covered a voluntary recall of ranitidine batches over NDMA in the active ingredient, with distributors, hospitals, retailers, pharmacies and clinics instructed to stop further distribution.
